italians against columbus day

it would be nice if i could find italian-americans who were

1. opposed to the use of columbus day as a community holiday and the use of columbus as a community icon
2. and who also could make appeals as to why columbus day stands for genocide without being all "and sometimes the I in NINA stood for italian"

i am not denying or invalidating italian-american experiences with ethnic discrimination. i'm just saying that italians need to come to terms with the fact they became white or arrived white and that a bunch of white people having a yay white people party on the anniversary of white presence on this continent is fucked and offensive.

if you need help figuring out how italians are as white as irish people, you can look at some books:

copypasta from this book summary

"Carefully drawing the distinction between race and color, Guglielmo argues that whiteness proved Italians' most valuable asset for making it in America. Even so, Italians were reluctant to identify themselves explicitly as white until World War II. By separating examples of discrimination against Italians from the economic and social advantages they accrued from their acceptance as whites, Guglielmo counters the claims of many ethnic Americans that hard work alone enabled their extraordinary success, especially when compared to non-white groups whose upward mobility languished."

another good read is "are italians white" which also includes stories by/about people of mixed heritage including italian who id as POC.

roots too is another good read, which looks at how exploring italian and other white ethnic identities was a big thing in the post-civil rights era. because columbus day (and other days too, ffs) are not the time to try and co-opt the experiences of POC.

so while i would like some initiative from italian-americans on the issue, in the meantime i invite pretty much everyone to have a look at this petition (which yes is the same one from ontd_f) to rededicate this holiday to native americans.

and if you do live in an italian-american community in the states, try and start this discussion.

I don't know.. that petition wants to take away my holiday. My values are weakening. (The day off, I mean).

I find it interesting that every italian american based gangster show has an episode on columbus day controversies in the community.

haha which ones? i'm behind on my mafia shows. like i've seen the godfather and a few episodes of jersey shore.

i am glad it is a controversy, at least. i don't think i've personally witnessed anything more than italian dudes bitching about the PC police.

Sopranos did an episode on it. It was more about teen angst and rage at daddy's friends than a real introspective thing on the issues, but it was neat to see it at least presented.
